Update from Senegal: victory for our oceans

by Raoul Monsembula is a Greenpeace Africa oceans campaigner based in Dakar, Senegal.

Last week, the Senegalese government cancelled all fishing permits for foreign“pelagic trawlers,” large fishing vessels that drag nets below the surface of the ocean.

Greenpeace vs. Shell’s Arctic Destroyers

by George Pletnikoff

Every day, Shell oil creeps closer to the Alaskan Arctic. When Shell likely obtains final US governmental approval sometime in the next month, they will send their two rusty rigs into the Beaufort and Chuckchi Seas to drill exploratory wells–and begin sucking the life out of one of the last wild places on earth. The 2012 Seafood Sustainability Scorecard

The devastation wrought by global industrialized fishing continues on a massive scale, and in spite of overwhelming evidence and strong warnings from the scientific community, we continue to plunder our seas. Populations of the ocean’s apex predators – sharks, tuna, swordfish, and similar animals – have dropped by as much as 90 percent. Bycatch remains a scandalous problem: each day, an enormous portion of the world’s total seafood catch is tossed over the sides of fishing boats due to inefficient, indiscriminate fishing methods. The worst of the destructive fishing practices, bottom trawling, is responsible for 80 percent of all bycatch incurred globally.

Greenpeace’s Carting Away the Oceans report has evaluated supermarket sustainability since 2008, and up until this year no retailer had earned a green rating. This year, for the first time, the CATO report features two retailers that have earned green ratings, vaulting them to the top of the list. Find out who topped the list.

Greenpeace Nordic Activists Occupy an Icebreaker Headed for the ArcticGuest blog by EoinD

In an effort to prevent destructive oil drilling in the Arctic, dozens of Greenpeace Nordic activists have boarded and occupied a Shell-contracted icebreaker in Helsinki harbor as it prepared to leave for the Alaskan Arctic. At 10:30 in Helsinki, Finland, 20 activists from 13 different countries boarded the Nordica and have locked themselves down throughout the ship, from the cabins to the top of the mast. Canned Tuna: A Harmful Food for the Environment

Chicken of the Sea: Carnage in a Can

It’s hard to quantify how environmentally harmful the foods we eat are, but the Huffington Post has taken a stab at it for Earth Day by compiling a list of the “Top Ten Most Harmful Foods for the Environment.” Tuna comes in at #8 on the list in terms of carbon footprint. But how accurate is that when we look at overall environmental destruction? When I think of the way tuna company Chicken of the Sea treats our oceans, US canned tuna merits a podium position. “Tuna the Wonderfish” not so wonderful after all

By Oliver Knowles, Greenpeace International

Multi-million dollar US advertising campaign to promote unsustainable canned tuna collapses

In March, just a year after the launch of a planned three-year, multi-million dollar advertising push to try and increase sales of unsustainable canned tuna in the US, the “Tuna the Wonderfish” advertising campaign – funded by US tuna companies and executed by the US industry lobby group National Fisheries Institute (NFI) – has collapsed, having already spent a staggering $20 million dollars (15 million euros) of a planned $60 million budget.

Thinking Outside the Can with Tarragon Trout Fritters with Beetroot Mayonnaise

There is life without eating tuna! Personally, I have quit eating tuna already for 8 years and I do care very much that the seafood that gets onto our plates is from sustainable sources. Greenpeace has started a campaign in order to finally stop ripping up our oceans. So people out there it is time to finally wake up! Why not try these trout fritters instead the usual tuna stuff?

Seitan Noodle Casserole

Vegan version of a classic

In this age of hurried meals, when even the most avid cooks crave a degree of convenience, casseroles can seem like a charming anachronism. They bring to mind perfect 1950s moms, wearing aprons and pearl earrings. Yet, there is irresistible comfort in a heartwarming casserole, and the entire enterprise can be brought up to date with contemporary ingredients and fresh produce. Here’s a vegan version of an old-fashioned casserole.

Think Outside the Can: Vegan Twist on the Classic Tuna Fish Sandwich

By Jerry James Stone (@jerryjamesstone), Cross-posted from Treehugger

I made this recipe exclusively for Greenpeace’s Think Outside the Can campaign. I am not a huge fan of fake meats so I used garbanzo beans to replicate the tuna-y texture. It worked out quite well. Enjoy!

The Battle to Save Menhaden Continues….

Take action to save menhaden!

Thanks to you and more than 91,000 other concerned members of the public, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission passed a precedent-setting conservation measure to protect menhaden.

But now comes the next, and more difficult step in the process — the one where the ASMFC actually figures out how they are going to do it.

Massive companies, like Omega Protein, want to see business continue as usual and are using their influence to push the Commission to delay action for up to another ten years. We’ve come too far already to let that happen.

The Atlantic ecosystem cannot wait any longer! Send your comments today and urge the ASMFC to make menhaden management a priority now.
